You might miss out on the true essence of the country you’re visiting
Less chance to meet new friends, engage in local interactions, and enjoy unique local cuisines
2. The Backpacker Adventure
On the flip side, if you’re a backpacker, you’re all about adventure, discovery, and budget-friendly travel.
Here’s what the backpacker lifestyle entails:
What You’ll Enjoy:
Affordable Accommodations: Stay in hostels, guesthouses, or budget hotels. This is where you meet fellow travelers and share stories over a meal or a drink. Some of your best friends will come from these places!
Street Food Feasts: Discover local cuisines at street food stalls and markets. You’ll taste the real flavors of Southeast Asia for a fraction of the price and who knows you may back a new local friend that will show you even more good food.
Spontaneous Exploration: Embrace a flexible travel schedule and discover hidden gems off the beaten path. Backpacking allows for spontaneous detours and unplanned adventures. Some of my best adventures have come this and now I have life long friends to show for it all.
Cultural Immersion: Engage with local communities, learn about their traditions, and dive deep into the culture of each destination. You find far more opportunities to learn and grow with the people and truly understand the environment around you.
Pros of Backpacking:

Money becomes more important than time
You’re at the mercy of others' bad habits and lack of awareness
Many experiences will be shared with strangers
More planning and organization required
3. Comparing Costs: Luxury vs. Backpacking
Here’s a quick comparison to help you decide based on your budget:
Luxury vs Backpacker Accommodations: $100+ per night (5-star hotels, resorts) vs $10-$30 per night (hostels, guesthouses)
Food: $30-$100+ per day (fine dining, upscale cafes) vs $5-$15 per day (street food, local eats)
Activities: $100+ per day (private tours, luxury experiences) vs $10-$30 per day (group tours, self-guided exploration)
Transport: $50+ per day (private transfers, taxis) vs $5-$20 per day (public transport, shared rides, rentals)
4. How to Decide: What’s Right for You?
Choosing between luxury travel and backpacking depends on your personal preferences, budget, and travel goals. Here are some questions to ask your self and decide:
What’s Your Budget? Are you looking to splurge or save? If you know you only have 1-2 weeks a year to enjoy the tropics, taking a luxury route may make more sense. However, if money is your motivator but time is not, backpacking will significantly extend your time and flexibility, allowing you to see and do far more.
What’s Your Travel Style? As I mentioned above, everyone has their own definition of travel and vacation, and sometimes it takes being in another country to find out what that is. Do you prefer constant comfort and exclusivity, or adventure and flexibility? Maybe a mix?
What Are Your Goals? Are you aiming for relaxation and pampering, or exploration and immersion? Do you really want to learn about the area around you, or are you just there to enjoy its luxuries?
There are no wrong answers! Everyone is different and has vastly different needs. I share more of my opinion below, but by no means does that make you a better or worse traveler based on what you resonate with.
5. Combining Both Worlds
Can’t Decide? Why Not Try a Bit of Both? Many travelers opt for a mixed approach, enjoying a few days of luxury followed by a period of backpacking. From my experiences, I initially went full-on backpacker for years. As I got older, I found that I wanted more comfort on my adventures and began to understand myself and my goals better. For instance, the last time I was in Vietnam, I was shooting video for my company and had long hours, so I needed my rest. Staying in a hotel made more sense than a hostel, which would have inevitably ruined our sleep schedule. However, in a new place we hadn’t been before, or if the goal was to adventure constantly, we stayed in hostels to meet new people and enjoy adventures with newfound friends.
I currently still do a mix of both based on where I’m going and what my goal is. Personally, if your budget allows, I would strongly suggest a mix of luxury and backpacking. You grow, learn, and experience a lot more than just luxury experiences, and you can always recharge for a few days in comfort before getting back out there! For places I’ve been to multiple times and have the confidence to navigate, I tend to stay in a nice villa or resort and venture out daily. It gives me the comfort of my own space while allowing for adventures. Although I will say I still do follow the backpacker trail everywhere I go as it’s yielded me the best results.
